Burswood Intercontinental Hotel

When the Intercontinental Hotel at Burswood, Western Australia needed a shading solution for their magnificent glass atrium they contacted Membrane Structures Pty Ltd.

Restaurant patrons beneath the atrium and within an air-conditioned environment had been suffering unwelcome and potentially harmful sunburn. A solution to provide shade for the atrium whilst keeping the open and airy nature of space was essential. Membrane Structures proposed a multi-level series of sails using dimensionally stable Ferrari Soltis 86 LowE silver fabric.

20 shade sails, some up to 30 meters long, fabricated using the highly reflective silver Soltis fabric, were strategically positioned and spaced over multiple levels of the atrium (up to 10 floors in height above ground level). As the sun moved throughout the day, sails on different levels acted in concert to provide shade to the restaurant below regardless of the sun’s midday position. During Summer, the overlapping sails provide near total cover to the restaurant below.

Restaurant patrons and the owners have all praised the elegant and thoughtful design for its light and ethereal appearance.
