“Dinosaur Bones”
Affectionately nicknamed “Dinosaur Bones” by airport staff, this self-supporting walkway cover was designed to give travellers efficient protection against sunshine and bad weather. It has also become a popular rendezvous point for departing and returning families and friends.
Dinosaur Bones covers the 270 metres from the airport to the car park. Made from a single piece of Précontraint 702 8104S White – the only textile capable of safely taking up the challenge – it met the requirements both of the designer and client in terms of good looks and safety. Additionally, it provides an ideal way to mask sight lines onto the runways.
It should be noted that installation took place only in the evenings to minimize any inconvenience, and in no way disturbed the day to day running of the airport – something that could only have been achieved with the use of membrane architecture. The architectural textile solution has proved its worth: a secondary similar project is under way on the inside of the airport.
