When the five-star Sofitel Hotel Broadbeach set out to define a multi-purpose area around its level-three pool, the managers required a solution that would create an aesthetically pleasing area offering shelter and privacy for guests. With a fine-dining restaurant adjacent to the pool, they also saw an opportunity to market the area for dining and private functions after pool hours.
The theme for the space was Arabian – luxurious cabana tents with curtains that flowed in the breeze – a solution created using versatile Agora fabric, which is ideal for diverse outdoor applications.
Mimicking a line of tents, the cabanas with conical canopies were designed to withstand inclement weather and exposure to the ocean. Each had to be large enough to accommodate two sunbeds and a coffee table or dining for eight and have user-friendly curtains, able to withstand strong winds and cope with outdoor conditions.
The result was a series of stylish cabanas custom designed to match the user’s brief. The design complies with Form 15 engineering – covering steel sizes, fabrication and componentry to withstand cyclonic conditions. The cabana curtains have an aluminium track set with fibre-reinforced glides, and the base of the curtains against the balustrade has been set using a steel cable through eyelets to prevent them blowing out. Each curtain can be opened or closed by guests or staff and has two sets of tiebacks, one for general use and a second to be safely tied back during storm conditions.
Stylish, weatherproof Agora fabric was also used for accessories and scatter cushions on the sun lounges.
The VIP atmosphere created by the cabanas has proven a winner with hotel guests. The poolside area is now in constant use both during the day and evening.
